Homemade gifts are always appreciated because they come from the heart. Cookies in a jar are an inexpensive homemade gift for anyone on your list who enjoys cookies.

I like to keep a few extra jars on hand around the holidays for surprise gift exchanges. Plus having pre-made cookie mix jars on the shelf makes it easy to bake up a batch of cookies quickly whenever a craving hits or unexpected guests arrive.

How to Make a Cookie Mix in a Jar

Cookie mixes in jars are made by layering the dry ingredients into 32-ounce sized jars, decorating with fabric and ribbon, and attaching a recipe card with the full recipe and instructions for making oatmeal chocolate chip cookies.

A full, printable recipe can be found at the bottom of this article, but here are the steps for making oatmeal chocolate chip cookies in a jar.

Step 1: Prepare the Jar

You will need a 32-ounce sized jar for this oatmeal chocolate chip cookie mix in a jar recipe. You can use quart sized mason jars, food storage canisters, craft store jars, or even recycled mayo jars. In a pinch, you can also re-use a 24-ounce spaghetti sauce jar if you omit the nuts.

If your jar has a label or sticker, remove it first by soaking in hot water, and scraping it off. Remove traces of stubborn sticky residue by rubbing it with paste of baking soda and dish soap until it is gone.

Wash the jars and lids with warm soapy water, rinse well, and air dry. Make sure the inside of the jar is clean and completely dry before filling. Aim a hair dryer into the jar for a few seconds to be sure all moisture is removed.

Step 2: Fill the Jar

You are going to layer the jar with the dry ingredients and pack each layer tightly to compress, and form a firm layer so the next ingredient can be layered on top.

Find something with a flat bottom that will fit in the jar to tamp down the ingredients and create a nice layer line. I use a wooden sauerkraut pounder, but you can use a large spoon, small flat-bottomed jar, or food pusher from a food processor or meat grinder.

A canning funnel will help fill the jar without making a mess. Measure and layer the ingredients in the following order:

  • Flour Layer: Combine the flour with the baking soda and salt. Place the funnel over the jar, and add the flour mixture to the bottom of the jar. Pack the flour mixture in tightly. If some flour clings to the side of the jar, wipe with a dry paper towel after flattening.
  • Oat Layer: Add the instant quick-cooking oats to the jar, and firm in as tightly as you can.
  • Sugar Layer: Add the sugar to the jar. It’s ok if it sifts a bit into the oat layer.
  • Brown Sugar Layer: Add the brown sugar to the jar and pack it. The brown sugar plays an important role of keeping the flour, oats, and sugar layer in place, while forming a firm structure for the chocolate chips to rest on.
  • Chocolate Chip Layer: Add the chocolate chips. They will sit loosely on top of the jar.
  • Walnut Layer: Finally, add the chopped walnuts to the jar and fill to the top.

Wipe the rim of the jar with a dry towel, and screw on the lid.

Step 3: Decorate the Jar

Decorate with a square of fabric tied with a ribbon, and attach the following recipe to the jar:

  • Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies
  • You will need: 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened, 1 large egg, and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract.
  • Contents in the jar: 1 cup flour, 1/2 teaspoon baking soda, 1/4 teaspoon salt, 1 1/4 cups instant quick-cooking oats, 1/4 cup white sugar, 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar, 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips, and 1/2 cup chopped walnuts.
  • Preheat oven to 350˚F. Grease baking sheets, or line with parchment paper.
  • Cream butter, egg, and vanilla in a large bowl until fluffy.
  • Add the ingredients from the jar, and stir well until combined.
  • Drop by rounded tablespoons onto the prepared baking sheets, placing 2 inches apart.
  • Bake 8 to 10 minutes in a preheated oven until edges are just browned. The center will still appear uncooked. Cool slightly, remove from baking sheet, and cool on a wire rack. Makes about 24 cookies.

If you use fresh ingredients, dry mixes can be stored for 6 months in a cool and dry location. The brown sugar may harden in the jar, but can be softened before using. Use the handle of a wooden spoon to break the brown sugar apart, place the pieces in a bowl, and soften by microwaving 1 to 2 minutes.
